In 1989, Didier Montagné, principal of the college in Neuvy-le-Roi, noticed the inescapable reduction in the number of pupils, due to rural depopulation.
Didier Montagné and his colleagues decided to set up a strategy for local development to shake the canton out of its lethargy. They created the association "Les Trois Vallées du pays de Racan" which was set up in the college.
The association has made it possible to affirm a territorial identity christened "Pays de Racan". The creation of a "maison de pays", a festival and an academy of classical music, "Les Bucoliques du pays de Racan", have given a fresh vitality to the whole canton.
