The poppy and the juice of its fruit were the first medecines against pain. Their story and that of their medical use is directly linked to that of the great periods of drug addiction.
Brief historical reminders are given of the Opium Wars from the 18th century onwards, of the separating of morphine from heroine in the 19th century, the film aims at showing, with some interviews and many varied documents, the two faces of the poppy and its derivatives, especially morphine whose use remains ambiguous.
