An obscure French Consul in China, Auguste François, made the headlines in 1900 by saving a handful of French citizens during the Boxer Revolt.
The adventures of this singular diplomat present a vivid picture and personal account of colonial China at the turn of the century. Auguste François not only witnessed but also played an active role in some of the major events of the time.
The tale of his Chinese adventures, recounted with humour in his correspondence and diary, is illustrated by the numerous photographs and films he shot with a camera lent by the Lumière brothers.
