A portrait of Mauritius and its inhabitants at the time of the French Language Summit Meeting. Mauritius, formerly île de France, makes all the greater impression on us because it is an example of the survival of a language, French, in spite of a foreign colonisation.
In this case, the language can be said to be the element which has united a multiracial society and which has allowed it to remain in contact with its partners in the Indian Ocean.
Time, History and a capacity for openmindness have made Mauritius a place of dialogue, of mingling and conviviality.
