Franek is a gambler, a small-time crook who gets by in the harsh Poland of the seventies. After becoming a friend and then assistant of Rysio, a violent ex-manager who has been convicted of fraud and has reinvented himself as work inspector in meat factories, Franek keeps making a succession of blunders. The plot is layered and allegorical: Grzegorz Królikiewicz constructs the film in a series of narratively unrelated scenes that share a highly critical attitude to the politics of the time and are grotesque, paradoxical and metaphysical. Dziworski's camerawork makes faces explode by repeated use of wide-angles, by flattening perspectives with the long lens and disrupting audience expectations with "impossible" and self-reflecting camera movements.
