The missing woman is the director’s mother, a figure he summons through memories of his brother and his three sisters. All of them are older and born of four different fathers. Their memories are compared with the artifacts their mother left behind – letters and captionless, sometimes torn photographs. The places she knew are revisited, from Paris’upscale 16th arrondissement to the working class suburbs of Aubervilliers, with a detour past Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Official records inquiries reveal her secret: the painful tale of her youth during the Occupation. Little by little, these fragments all come together as the cohesive whole of one life which, by its very messiness, makes a unique statement about the liberty of a twentieth-century woman.
