Two Uncles is a detective story in the form of an essay or an essay in the form of a detective story. The film is also very personal, telling the story of director’s family being tormented by a mystery, uncle Paavo, who disappeared during the battles of Hanko in 1941. Is Paavo really dead or was he taken prisoner and continued leading his life in the Soviet Union? The family is given signs of the other life Paavo is possibly living. The drawing on the cover of a Russian magazine resembles Paavo, and somebody claims to have seen him in a hotel lobby in Moscow.
