Based on material filmed by a dozen amateur filmmakers, Otakar Vávra compiles an important film on the Czech uprising and the resistance leading, in May 1945, to the country's liberation. The ubiquitous and at times pathetic commentary in no way diminishes the power of this film which depicts, using unique documents, the struggle of a small country in the heart of Europe against fascism and totalitarian barbarity.
