A vigorous comment by Jean Cocteau tells about Venice's poisonous attraction on the harassed souls of remarkable writers and musicians of the end of the nineteenth century who stayed in its palaces : Lord Byron, precursor of the romantic pilgrimage, Alfred de Musset and George Sand, Gabriele d’Annunzio and Eleonora Duse, Richard Wagner in his old years, all of them fell for the city where slowness reigns, enemy of the lovers' jealousy, ally of their torments.
