Within the framework of a day's work amongst a group of switchboard operators, Damicelli alternates between industrial documentary style and clips extracted from “white telephone” cinema—comedies from the fascist years. Thus to illustrate the electromagnetic mechanisms involved in dialling a phone number, the film is enlivened with subtle and unexpected little gags.
