At Faucterie in Normandy, on June 3, 1835, Pierre Rivière, a young man of twenty years assassinated his mother, his sister and his younger brother with a hedging-bill before taking flight. For more than a month, Pierre wandered through the marshes and along the seafront, eating grasses, shellfish, roots and a few clumsily caught animals before he was finally arrested. During his examination and then trial, Pierre revealed the true motives of hisiple crime.
