Long marginalised because of his non-conformity to the point of becoming the curse of the Czech New Wave, Karel Vachek only proved the full extent of his talent with this recent trilogy, in which, starting from reflections on the news, he depicts his country, and a fundamentally shaken civilisation. It is impossible to summarise these films where documentary turns toward fiction, the shooting itself becoming part of the show. The daring of his formal inventiveness is visible in the "happening-dialogues" into which the filmmaker drags his characters, chosen from among statesmen as well as philosophers, underground rockers and wierdos of all types, including informers from the communist period.
