1924 - France - Noir & Blanc - 16'

Le Ballet mécanique dates from the period when architects spoke about the machine civilisation. There was at this time a new realism which I personally used in my paintings and this film. This film is above all the proof that machines and fragments, ordinary manufactured objects are full of artistic possibilities. The whole film is constructed on the idea of contrasting objects, slow and fast passages, moments of rest and intensity. I used the close up shot, the only invention of the cinema. The fragment of an object is also useful; by isolating it, it becomes a character. All this work led me to consider that the event of objectivity is an extremely current and new value.” (Fernand Léger)
