In 1993, Anselm Kiefer left Buchen, Southern Germany, for Barjac, Southern France. He installed La Ribotte there, a “hill studio” consisting in forty-eight buildings that stretch over more than thirty-five hectares, like a weird sprawling village. The film strolls about this accumulation place, plunging into the huge maze of tunnels, underground crypts, bridges and lakes. It goes through caves and forests, ending up in a wide landscape scattered with concrete towers that are assembled like houses of cards... In this place, creation and destruction are interdependent; the film takes on the raw materials used by Kiefer to create his paintings and sculptures: lead, concrete, ashes, acid, earth, glass and gold...
