After his arrival in Wrocław Jacob Dammas (a Dane, whose mother is Polish) visits the place where his mother was living with her father, before their exile connected with her Jewish origin at the end of the sixties. He is talking to her former neighbors, he is directed to yet another address to find an old-time family memento — the cupboard, mentioned in the title.
