At Montesano in Salento during the August celebrations in honour of Saint Donatus—the patron saint of epileptics and the mentally ill—strange phenomena and rituals occur, the fruit of powerful collective suggestion. Di Gianni, a master of anthropological documentary, films with dionysian power the agitated and screaming faithful like in a pagan rite, showing how the outer form of Catholic liturgy succumbs to the primitive furore of popular religiousness.
