Edgar Anstey, Arthur Elton
1935 - Grande-Bretagne - Noir & Blanc - 15'
Made as a promotion for the gas industry and enlightened civic authorities, this film exemplifies the purpose of the Documentary Film Movement. Its depiction of South London slums achieves a degree of naturalism through allowing the dwellers direct address elicited by off-screen interviewer Ruby Grierson who told the subjects: “The camera is yours. The microphone is yours. Now tell the bastards exactly what it's like to live in slums”.
