A documentary from footage Jørgen Leth shot over a period of 10 years. “I’m hypnotised by life in Haïti. [...] I get the feeling of personally delving beneath the surface, into chaos”, Leth writes. “I’m fascinated by the chaos, its mysteries, horrors, sensuality and surreal scenes. Haïti is a strange blend of tragedy and comedy...”. The viewer is whirled into a multitude of scenes painting a picture of a chaotic society with a logic of its own: the ecstasy of voodoo seances, political power games triggering waves of violence and death in the streets, a poetic beauty and sensuality especially regarding Haitian women and their daily chores.
