Giuseppe Taffarel has only been recently recognised as a master of Italian documentary. In this little masterpiece he shows the harsh reality of a family of peasants in Valbrenta, an aging couple who ceaselessly work their plots of land, tearing the soil from the mountain to cultivate tobacco. The silence of their gestures, the hard look in their eyes, recount the reality of the "world of the vanquished" and the immense suffering they have endured.
