Pam Sambo Zima, priest of the possession rite in Niamey since 1939, died in March 1974. Jean Rouch films, in a long uninterrupted shot-sequence, the meeting of the initiated and faithful in the courtyard of Pam's holding. These have come to symbolically break pottery and share ritual clothing while the musicians tap on the gourd-drums. The mourning over, the Gods of the Sky can name Pam Sambo Zima's successor. The oldest woman among the initiated is chosen to preside over the possession dance ritual.
