Thomaz Reis was director of the “Photo and Cinema section of the Rondon Commission”, responsible of recording the numerous military expeditions led by Field Marshal Rondon. In Ao Redor do Brasil, Reis assembled scenes from several preceding films with footage taken during the third expedition aimed at installing a telegraph line in the Amazon region to create a travelogue exuding the positivist ideas of the brand new Brazilian Republic, marked by the political project of colonising the country’s little explored regions.
