In the guise of a fake documentary, the director films more or less talented young amateur singers presenting an audition to be hired at the Semaphore, a Prague cabaret devoted to jazz and pop music in the sixties. This film demonstrates Miloš Forman's passion for music, perceptible in all his work, as well as the freedom of tone adopted by the Czech New Wave.
