Alongside the men’s prison in Rennes, there is a reception area for the prisoners’ families. People come here before and after the visit. And they come back. Every week. And they wait. A space between parentheses. It takes time. People arrive early, always. A few seconds late and the gates of the prison remain shut. So you wait, alongside, to be sure to be on time, in a minute or so, inside. To bear going there, you have to be well grounded in life to the point of knowing how to enliven this immeasurably long wait. Prison in reverse, life without the other. But surely not outside of life.
