Already, the coal mines are starting to shut down, causing unemployment and devastating the traditional economy of the region. In spite of the crisis, families try to face their difficulties, while Italian, Greek or Yugoslavian youngsters go to school mixing with their French speaking friends. For a change and to escape from the morally stifling influence of the priest, these kids sitting on pie dishes throw themselves "full of dust" into epic "sliding" races on the forbidden slag heaps, transforming the flat country sung by Brel into a zone full of hills and valleys.
