Scientists and artists have been fascinated by astronomic photography from its appearance in the mid 19th century. It would enable them to record and materialise phenomena, which had been invisible so far.
"Invisible" can mean open to the imagination. For some astronomers, it reinforced their belief in the Moon, Mars or Venus being inhabited...
Victor Hugo's thoughts on the infinite, Jules Vernes's stories ("De la Terre à la Lune") and H.G. Wells's novels were inspired by the scientific reveries of their time.
The works written by Camille Flammarion "The Multicity of inhabited worlds", "Popular Astronomy" have fed the imagination of many painters, poets and writers, and the perception of something beyond the visible world has transformed the imaginative universe of artists to this day.
