( Bokassa 1er empereur de Françafrique )

On 4th December 1977, the dictator Jean-Bedel Bokassa, proclaimed himself the Emperor of the Central African Republic, a small country with just 2 million inhabitants. For this special occasion he staged a pseudo-coronation complete with laurel wreath and ermine stole that harked back to the Napoleonic era, albeit with a tropical twist.
For those who witnessed the event, the sacrament of Bokassa the First was both a grandiose masquerade and an act of luxurious debauchery in one of the poorest countries in the world.
