Marcel Bercau, his father and one of his brothers were arrested in Paris on 20 August 1941. They inaugurated the opening of the camp in Drancy which was to become a hub for the deportation of Jews in France. His father was deported first in June 1942.
Later in Auschwitz, Marcel, asking a deportee with a little number (around 42,000), if he could give him news of his father, was given the answer, "Don’t ask that sort of question. Here, you have to think of only one thing : trying to survive. Think of yourself and don’t think of your family".
