Le Silence des âmes mortes
François L. Woukoache
1995 - 52 min - Super 16 mm - Couleur - Belgique, Allemagne
A hundred years have gone by since the deportation of Africans to the New World ended. The Cinema celebrates its centennial. To make a film on black slave trading means confronting oneself to the absence of images (there are no archives nor living witnesses).
The film tells the story of a young African traumatised by the violence he sees in the word. To escape from this violence he finds refuge in his own imagination and finds himself faced with a major part of the History of black people : slave trading.
It is a journey through the imaginary, through memory. A journey at the centre of pain and suffering, a journey through the core of horror. Relentlessly questioning empty places. Empty places filled with memories.
