In the Ivory Coast, fish is the main source of animal protein. However, the national production does not succeed in satisfying all the requirements, therefore, a considerable amount of fish is imported.
A considerable effort is made by the government of the Ivory Coast in order to allow the country to be self-sufficient as far as food is concerned. This object can be attained through aquaculture which is also used to develop the coastal lagoons over 1,200 km2.
Under these conditions, the researchers from the Centre of Oceanological Researches at Abidjan work with a view to developing simple techniques which can be easily used by riverside residents and are based on the stock breeding installations situated in the natural environment and on the cultivation of aboriginal species.
