At the beginning of the 80's, Raï burst out and spread all over Algeria. Some years later, Cheb Mami, Cheb Khaled..., who went to conquer France, has managed to made a name for themselves in this country. Algeria was at the time both wishing for the liberalisation of morals and suffocating under an ideological and moral yoke. Raï, which was born at the beginning of the decade in Oran, had dared to express all these frustrations in the open. At the beginning they perpetuated and ancient style, but then moved on towards a greater modernity. It particularly allowed women, who where of so little importance, to express themselves.
