In spring, during the making of a film in South Africa, the actress Anny Romand commuted for onehour each way to the set in Johannesburg. Over the course of four months, some fifteen chauffeurs drove her car : one morning, to combat the boredom, she decides to film her varied and mysterious drivers.
Through the miles of their journeys and some simple questions, the experiences and destinies of people were revealed with a surprising depth and intensity. The repeating trips inspired confidence in the chauffeurs.
One evening after the film had wrapped, the technicians offered a birthday present to their director : a young, white, South-African woman performing a strip-tease.
"Afrikaan Strip-tease" intercuts the seductive dance of the comely woman and the chauffeurs confessions. The result is a stunning portrait of a world still reeling from centuries of torment followed by vast, rapid change and one whose human dimension remains largely cloaked to outsiders.
