One of the figures of the Italian student movement in 1968 and a refugee in France for fifteen years after being sentenced for subversion and belonging to an armed group, Oreste Scalzone analyses his life by asking the question, "How does one come to taking up arms?"
Through his story and the relationship that the women of his family and some of his closest friends who have stayed on the other side of the border have with their memories, the phenomenon of armed struggles in Italy, often reduced by the official version of these years to a few spectacular actions by the Red Brigades, is restored to its initial context of an ample movement of social protest.
