For nearly twenty-five years, the Maison du doc has striven to gather, store, conserve and valorise francophone documentary production as exhaustively as possible. The collection built up over these decades today includes nearly forty-two thousand films recorded in a database. Year after year, this resource centre, which is unique in Europe, has constructed a cooperative video library of more than eighteen thousand titles. Thanks to the support of filmmakers, producers and rights holders, this catalogue is enriched with new titles each year.
Recognition of this precious activity has resulted in the fact that the Maison du doc became associated with the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 2015. The two entities have started collaborating and cooperating with the objective of totally digitizing the film collection within two or three years.
The Ardèche images resource centre has long been a pioneer in the field of safeguarding, preserving and valorising creative documentary. It has constantly reflected on how to develop its activity and widen its field of action. The fastidious but necessary work of digitization which has begun will permit, within a few months, the launching of a new online platform designed for professionals in the audiovisual sector, researchers, teachers and students. The online Club du doc will facilitate online research and research requests. It will offer the opportunity of screening and working on line with the films for which the rights holders have given us their agreement. Docfilmdepot is another example of the way the Maison du doc has been evolving. This platform allows festivals that programme documentary to manage the entire procedure from a film’s registration to its previewing and selection. It significantly facilitates the entire registration process to festivals for filmmakers, producers, distributors and rights holders. One year after its creation, Docfilmdepot has federated more than twenty festivals dealing with documentary and around four thousand films from over eighty production countries.
The Maison du doc has as its prime ambition to be a pivot around which documentary keeps moving. A place open to documentary, a place open on documentary, a place open to the world.
